It’s mid-May, which means that we are nearly through with our Spring 2026 releases. The last book of the season, Black Identities and Media in the Twenty-First Century, comes out on June 24.

That said, our Fall 2026 catalog is officially live, and all books are available for pre-order! As always, we have a lot of great history, poetry, biography, and nonfiction, including a new book in our popular Louisiana True series and the first book in our SoFAB Series on the Culture of Food and Drink. Awards and Honors

The Obituary Cocktail, by Sue Strachan, is a 2026 James Beard Foundation Book Award nominee in the Beverage without Recipes category.

Sue writes of the nomination: “To have The Obituary Cocktail nominated for a James Beard award is such an honor. The book shows that cocktail culture is another way of telling New Orleans history, and I couldn’t have done it without my fellow authors, bartenders, and other cocktail aficionados. And many thanks to the owners of Café Lafitte and their patrons, who one night decided to add a bit of absinthe to their gin martinis and named it the Obituary Cocktail!”

The award winners will be announced at the James Beard Media Awards ceremony on Saturday, June 13, at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Damian Shiels has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2026 American Battlefield Trust Prize for History for Green and Blue: Irish Americans in the Union Military. The winner of the $50,000 prize will be announced this summer.

Bridget Bennett was awarded an Honorable Mention for the British Association of American Studies’ 2026 Book Prize for Antislavery in the Dissenting Atlantic: Archives and Unquiet Libraries, 1776–1865. In November, Antislavery in the Dissenting Atlantic received the 2025 Shelley Fisher Fishkin Prize from the American Studies Association.

Here in Louisiana, festival season is in full swing. In New Orleans, last weekend’s French Quarter Festival has bled into this weekend’s Jazz & Heritage Festival, while in Lafayette, the iconic Festival Internationale de Louisiana has just begun. Elsewhere, Arnaudville is preparing for its annual Etouffée Festival, while Prairieville gears up for St. John’s Festival de la Prairie.

Books are always an integral part of festival season! In the past month alone, Louisiana has seen the New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University, the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival, the Saints + Sinners Literary Festival, the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival, and the New Orleans Poetry Festival. If you’re out and about this weekend, have fun, stay cool, and send us a picture!

Awards and Honors

Christopher Kempf received a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry! LSU Press published Kempf’s 2021 collection What Though the Field Be Lost, which uses the Gettysburg battlefield to engage ongoing issues involving race, regional identity, and the ethics of memory.

The Furies, by Moira Egan, was chosen as a finalist for the 2026 Poetry by the Sea Book Award. Judge Rachel Hadas called the collection “lush and vulnerable, edgy and imaginative. . . unmistakably personal and always individual.”

The Illinois Woman’s Press Association awarded Bradley Morgan’s Frank Zappa’s America First Place for General Adult Nonfiction in its annual Mate E. Palmer Communications Contest. The judges called the work an “exceptionally well-written eye-opening account of Frank Zappa, his music, and beliefs. Apropos in today’s challenging political environment.”

The New York Public Library chose Steve Scafidi’s touching ode to Appalachia, The Appalachian Sea, as one of the 25 Best New Poetry Books.

We’re finally on the other side of the AWP Conference & Bookfair (the largest literary conference in North America), where we sold books and hosted author signings with Rebecca Hazelton, Biljana D. Obradović, Daniel Tobin, Kate Gaskin, Moira Egan, Catherine W. Carter, Bruce Bond, John Wall Barger, Chelsea Whitton, Rose McLarney, and Christopher Bakken. We also cohosted a reading with the University of Wisconsin Press, the University of Pittsburgh Press, and the Southern Review, and met a lot of delightful people—including many of our newer authors—in the flesh, for the first time! Awards and Honors

Four-time LSU Press poet Alice Friman will be inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame along with Charlie Smith on April 24 in Athens, GA. The induction ceremony, which is cosponsored by the University of Georgia and the Georgia Review, will take place at Athica Athens Institute of Contemporary Art.

The late Wendy Barker’s The Complete Poems was an honor winner in the Burdine C. Johnson Award for Best Book of Poetry category in the Texas Institute of Letters’ 2026 Literary Awards.

In Memoriam

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Cees Nooteboom, the Dutch literary giant whose prolific journalism, poetry, and short, philosophical novels have left a deep imprint on contemporary letters. Nooteboom was first brought to English-language readers with the translation of his Pegasus Prize-winning 1980 novel, Rituals, which LSU Press published in 1983. Over the course of the decade, we published translations of four more of his novels: two contemporary and two from his early ouevre. Those were A Song of Truth and Semblance (1984); In the Dutch Mountains (1987); Philip and the Others (1988); and The Knight Has Died (1990). All novels were translated by the late Adrienne Dixon and featured beautiful covers by Joanna Hill and Laura Roubique Gleason.

Our condolences to Nooteboom’s loved ones during this time.

A graphic novel adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces will appear in September. The graphic novel is adapted and illustrated by the acclaimed cartoonist Albert Monteys, who also did Slaughterhouse-Five: The Graphic Novel.

In Memoriam

It is with deep sadness that LSU Press recognizes the passing of editor, historian, and Louisiana civil rights cold case journalist Stanley Nelson. Nelson dedicated the past two decades to investigating and telling the stories of murder victims of the Ku Klux Klan, and published two books with us: Devils Walking and Klan of Devils. Nelson’s life and work were celebrated at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, October 22.
